Cadence Inaugurates Beijing IC and System Design Institute, the First of Its Kind in Asia Pacific; Cadence to Enable China to Provide World-Class IC and Systems Design
Zhongguancun Cadence Institute of Software Technology
to Train 1,000 Students a Year
BEIJING—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Oct. 19, 2003—
Cadence Design Systems, Inc. (NYSE:CDN) and Beijing Zhongguancun
Software Education Investment Co Ltd, a consortium of Beijing-based
investment companies and the Beijing government, today will mark the
opening of the pioneering US$30 million Zhongguancun Cadence Institute
of Software Technology (ZCIST). Fan Bo Yuan, vice mayor of Beijing,
will lead the inauguration ceremony with the unveiling of the plaque
for the official opening.
Designed with a vision to help transform China from an electronics
manufacturing base into a world-class center for IC and system design,
the 120,000-square-meter ZCIST is the first of its kind in the Asia
Pacific region. Unlike other training institutes for IC design
software tools, ZCIST will provide engineers with comprehensive IC and
system design methodologies, skills and knowledge to significantly
increase their design capabilities.
"Electronics manufacturing is continuing to shift to China, and
all the indicators are that China's semiconductor industry will
continue to grow faster than in the rest of the world," said Ray
Bingham, Cadence(R) president and CEO, and chairman of ZCIST.
"Cadence and the Beijing government share the same vision -- to
nurture IC design talent in China with a view to strategically
advancing China's electronics industry," Bingham said. "With the
exceptional level and quality of training that ZCIST will provide, we
believe that local post-graduate engineers will become world-class
design engineers, and China a hub of world-class IC design in the
future."
More than 300 guests, including top government officials and
senior representatives from both local and international trade and
industry, were expected to attend the inauguration ceremony. Many
leading technology vendors have demonstrated their support for this
initiative, including Sun Microsystems, which has already committed to
sponsoring students.
In a March 2003 report, leading research firm Gartner Dataquest
forecast that the Chinese semiconductor industry would grow 19 percent
in 2003 -- from US$22.34 billion to US$26 billion -- and is expected
to reach US$46 billion by 2007.
"We are committed to helping to develop and advance China's
electronic design industry," said Song Xiao Hai, vice chairman of
ZCIST. "Today's ceremony represents a remarkable combination of vision
and determination. It shows how rapidly things can be achieved when
organizations come together with a common goal. The institute is a
landmark in China's development as a world-class IC and system design
center."
Situated in the Beijing Zhongguancun Science Park, an area
dedicated to R&D and other activities in a variety of disciplines,
including integrated circuits, biotech and software, ZCIST has been
built from the ground up. A two-phase development -- the first of
which will serve 500 students -- it has been designed to provide
training for up to 1,000 residential students per year with courses
ranging from three to 12 months.
The institute will offer six bilingual courses covering practical
and advanced training on system level design, logic design and
verification, synthesis and place and route, analog/mixed-signal
design, custom IC layout design and high-speed PCB design.
"Graduates of ZCIST will become the future pillars of China's
electronics design industry," said Dr. Lee De-Lei, chairman and
president of ARCA Technology Corporation. "With their increasing IC
design capability, more IC design houses will be able to offer
products, both excellent in performance and competitive in price, to
meet the demands of China's growing market."
The joint venture is the latest instance of Cadence investing in
China. In 2002, the company announced plans to invest US$50 million to
build a strong network of R&D, customer support and services over the
coming years. It also opened the Cadence High-speed Technology Center
in Shanghai to serve its growing customer base in Asia Pacific with
training, education programs and methodology and consultancy services.
"China has become an important player in global electronics, and
these ventures combine to help drive this powerful economic engine for
China," said Bingham. "Cadence and our customers will also benefit
greatly. Each of these endeavors connects Cadence and our customers
around the world to China."
Cadence has offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu and Shenzhen.
The company also has a wholly owned subsidiary, Beijing Cadence
Electronic Technology Company.

About ZCIST
The Zhongguancun Cadence Institute of Software Technology (ZCIST)
occupies 200 acres in Beijing's Zhongguancun Science Park, an area
dedicated to research and development and other activities in a
variety of disciplines. Opened in April 2003, the campus construction
area covers 32,000 square meters and includes lecture theatres,
offices and living accommodation. Equipped with 300 workstations and
1,800 licenses, the institute will have the capacity to provide
training for more than 1,000 students. Courses are typically three to
six months in duration and cover topics such as: system level design,
logic design and verification, synthesis and place and route,
analog/mixed-signal design, custom IC layout design and high-speed PCB
design. The institute is staffed by leading professors and experts
